Stay hydrated in Summer…

drinkingwaterSummer season is upon us in India and we are getting barbecued in the blazing sun. Dehydration is a common problem seen during this time. The soft drink companies mint money as the buyers are guzzling away.

Health needs to be maintained very much during this time as dehydration can be fatal. Dehydration involves loss of water and various electrolytes. Symptoms include dizziness, dry mouth and less urine production or the color of the urine changes to dark urine. Chronic dehydration can result in stomach infections, poor skin and can increase your chances of kidney stones due to concentrated urine.

How do you prevent it? Try the tips which I personally follow-

  • Carry a bottle every where you go and remember, keep sipping. This keeps you hydrated all day long.
  • Replace soft drinks such as coke (which I totally stay away from) with lime juice. Lime is rich in various electrolytes like sodium, potassium, chlorides etc. Soft drinks can further dehydrate you and corrode your bones and teeth etc. Lime juice can be had with sugar too as a little sugar will provide you some instant energy and salt will provide further electrolytes. I love adding a dash of lime juice to a glass of cold water and is a very refreshing drink, rich in vitamin C.
  • Coconut water is another refreshing drink and is very easily available, even if there is no availability of drinking water. Rather than buying a bottle of coke, replace it with tender coconut water for a refreshing change.
  • Eat a lot of water based fruits like watermelon, pineapple, citrus fruits and any other seasonal fruits.
  • You need to take extra care to drink enough water while exercising as the seasonal heat can dehydrate you more.

Stay away from excessive intake of juices. I try to avoid juices as much as possible for their sugar content.

Get out your swim gear and get into water to chill out in the season.
