Do low carb diets work?

low_carbFad diets are always a rage and every second client of mine wants a low carb, low fat diet. I have innumerable clients who are scared of carbohydrates. They want to stop eating rice but the burger at local eatery is okay. It is very easy actually to go on a diet where many starve and cut out all carbs. They end up eating very less calories and over exercising. Many lose weight this way to look good for weddings etc and then they let go of thier diet. Whoosh all the weight comes back and some of them even gain more.

Too rigid diets are very harmful as they usually are not balanced and are nutritionally poor. Very low food intake can make you tired, crabby and poor energy levels. Some lose hair, have lower levels of iron and end up have injuries due to over exercising.

We need to remove the mind block that carbs are bad. We need carbs for energy. But we need to eat the right carbohydrates, the correct amount within your caloric limit. It can hamper your metabolism as the energy levels are very low and will end up indulging in higher calorie foods.

Whole grain bread, oats, brown rice, legumes etc are the grains which provide good carbs and fiber. Fruits and vegetables are “good” or complex carbs. So each meal should have a proper combination of such carbs with lean protein. So do not worry about just carbs but also look at your portions of food if you are eating more than necessary then you will definitely gain weight.
