Bottle Gourds are very beneficial to our health. Lauki, dudhi or bottle gourd holds pride of place in the Indian Ayurvedic medical system. Here is why our ancestors included it in their regular diet, and why it still makes sense to do so.
Lauki is 96.1% water, so is light on the stomach and aids digestion. A 100 gm serving of lauki contains just twelve calories and is ideal if you are watching your weight. You can read a more previous articles on bottle gourd here. Now lets catch up with the juice.

Hi Sanjana,
I recently gone thru a research article posted by a doctor, which says that bitterness in bottle guard or in any Cucurbitaceae family can prove to be extremely toxic and can have adverse effect on the human body. What is your opinion on that?. Is there any special advice to the readers and followers of such alternate medicines?.
Thanks for your time and reply.
Srikanth M.
Hi Srikanth,
Yes, my first advice to all those who follow treatments through alternate forms of medicine should see the qualifications of the doctor to whom they are consulting as there are a lot of fake doctors who do a 3 month stint in Thailand or South India and call themselves”doctors”. The composition of these medicines are also fake where they add steroids to speed up the healing or treatment. I have seen several patients suffer kidney failure or get steroid induced diabetes and on questioning them well, we discover that the sources are “Ayurvedic medicines”. There are very good qualified practitioners who have their theory and practical right and Ayurveda and homeopathy are complex fields which require years of study and practice.
About the bitter gourd query, any food taken in excess can become toxic depending on the nutritional value as excess of any nutrient is toxic. Hence an intake of variety of food will help you in preventing any of the toxicity. Even obesity is a kind of toxicity as it is due to excess of nutrients in the body.

Hello Sanjanaji,
You mentioned in another of your articles, that Bottle-Gourd should not be eaten raw because it causes stomach upsets,
Please clarify whether the juice from raw Dudhi won’t cause any stomach problems.
Thanks for all the wonderful articles.
Shaleen
Hi Shaleen,
Some people do not tolerate raw vegetable juices as they do not have the enzymes to break down fiber, hence may experience bloating and cramping in the stomach. So you will need to try whether dhudi juice works or not…
thanks for the compliments
